Advanced Illumination Source.

Abstract

This contract covers the engineering development of an advanced illumination source for battlefield application. The demonstration system is intended for installation in a cargo aircraft, providing 20 minutes of illumination of a large battlefield area (several square miles) to an intensity level sufficient to insure efficient conduct of hunt and kill operations. The system under development is unique in that it utilizes the combustion products of (liquid oxygen and JP) reactants to heat quartz cylinders to incandescence to provide high intensity light. A considerable amount of program effort was expended on the design and fabrication of the reactant feed and control system. It is estimated that physical completion was at the 85 percent point at the time program activity was terminated. (Author)
