Ultra High-Speed Data Modem.
Abstract
The purpose of this contract was to build and test an experimental model of a multilevel PAM vestigial sideband modem with continuous automatic equalization capable of transmitting data at 4800, 9600, and 14,400 bits per second over a Schedule 4B telephone line. The modem was required to achieve bit error rates of better than .000001 errors per bit at 4800 and .0001 errors per bit at 9600 over a simulated Schedule 4B channel. The channel was to be 'worst' case in the sense that the attenuation and delay versus frequency characteristics were to just lie within the specification boundaries and the added gaussian noise was to be only 26 db down from the signal when measured in the channel bandwidth.
