Foundational Research Projects Quarterly Report, January-March 1969,

Abstract

Two articles are presented. In Detonation Turbulence, an approximate analytic solution of the vorticity equation is reported which shows some of the properties of turbulence, an understanding of which is essential for predicting the flow of detonation products behind the detonation front in explosive lenses. The second article, Nonresonant Interband Faraday Rotation in Silicon, is a report on measurements of Faraday rotation in intrinsic silicon, made with a magnetic field of 20 kG at room temperature in the spectral region 0.45-2.05 eV. The measurements are discussed in terms of both the semiclassical theory of Kolodziejczak, Lax, and Nishina, and the quantum mechanical theory of Boswarva, Howard, and Lidiard. (Author)
