Studies of Gas-Solid Interactions Using a Modulated Beam Mass Spectrometer.

Abstract

The design and status of experiments intended to provide increased understanding of certain gas-solid interactions is described. Preliminary results are presented for studies of the free evaporation of carbon from graphite surfaces at temperatures up to 3000K, and for the reaction of molybdenum with beams of partially dissociated oxygen. Preparations for studies of equilibrium vaporization of graphite, reflection of carbon vapor by graphite surfaces, and the reaction of graphite and other refractory materials with the reactive constituents of high temperature air are also described.
