Development of Three-Dimensional Weaving Process and Equipment.

Abstract

The purpose of this program has been to study, design, and build a special loom for the fabrication of three dimension filamentous cylinders and cones of revolution for hypersonic reentry heatshields and nose tips. Demonstration items have also been fabricated on the equipment. The loom as conceived, designed and fabricated was demonstrated to be a practical process with success depending almost entirely on the quality of the mandrel. Smooth, well machined radials and radial corridors were a must and the radials themselves must be strong and elastic. The characteristics of the yarn heavily influences the loom design, especially, the small weaving tools that must be able to handle the specific yarn being woven. The design of the material to be woven has a vital bearing on the loom design, but vise versa, the ability of the loom to weave the material also dominates the material design.
