Rapid Site Preparation Techniques. Prevention of Soil Erosion on an Earth-Filled Aircraft Shelter.

Abstract

A lightweight, low cost, long life erosion resistant cover for protecting the earth fill over a steel aircraft shelter was successfully demonstrated. The materials used were a composite fiber glass mat and a fire retardant polyester resin. The selected system weighs 3.9 pounds per square yard and costs $1.59 per square yard. A test area 12 feet by 80 feet on a prototype shelter was constructed over four feet of earth fill in approximately one half hour or a rate of about 2000 square feet per hour. The application equipment, which was developed for preparing VTOL aircraft landing and take-off sites, was used by adding a 90 foot hose and hand held spray gun. Recommendation is made for development of a small 1000 pound unit for operational use. (Author)
