An Investigation of Stratospheric Temperature Soundings.

Abstract

Twenty-three rocketsonde and eleven radiosonde soundings were investigated to determine if correlation could be established between them, and to determine the propagation of temperature anomalies observed. A visual as well as a statistical study of each of these soundings was made to determine correlation. Anomaly propagation was determined by following the movement of the centroids of these anomalies. Based on these studies, it was determined that some correlation does exist between the soundings, and it was shown that the anomalies propagate downward at a rate from 0.86 km/day near 80,000 feet to 2.19 km/day near 120,000 feet.
