Evaluation of Series 'R' Fuel Cell Design.

Abstract

This report is concerned with the evaluation of the characteristics of the Series 'R' solid polymer electrolyte, incorporate it into flight-type fuel cell hardware with a goal of operation in the 150-200F temperature range for 1500 hours at 20 lb/KW fuel cell weight, and demonstrate by test results the attainment of the design goal. Evaluation tests were performed and flight-type hardware was designed, constructed and tested. Evaluation fuel cells (3 x 3 inch size) operated for over 5000 hours at 180F, remaining essentially invariant at 0.78 VDC and 100 ASF. These cells clearly demonstrated the life capability of the Series 'R' design. The cell design for 2 KW flight hardware consists of back-to-back cell pairs of 54.5 square inches active area on each cell. Cell assemblies of this design demonstrated performance capability above the specification. Life evaluation of this hardware was limited by the necessity to develop bonding materials and procedures compatible with the lightweight design and the life in the existing environment. The prototype hardware fabricated during this phase resulted in a projected power density of 25 lb/KW. The Series 'R' ion exchange membrane has demonstrated the capability to meet design requirements, with additional hardware development required to optimize the design for producibility. (Author)
