Closed Circuit TV Tracking Error Detector.

Abstract

The tracking error detector (TED) is an edge tracker used to track a small target, by deriving target-image-position information from a normal television camera raster, and to provide direct digital readout of image offset from the camera optical axis. The original digital gate-generating circuits have been replaced with much simpler analog circuits with no loss of accuracy. The present system, which is designed for use with the automatic cinetheodolite tracking system, furnishes digital elevation and azimuth data simultaneously from one camera and can track a target one TV line in width. Another version of the TED is used as a subsystem in the digitized optical radar collimation system (DORCS) whose description, operation, and maintenance are described in NWC TP 4299. A third system, the automatic television tracker (ATVT), has been developed using a modified baseline TED with the addition of an interface for compatibility with a Data Machines 620 computer. The ATVT functions as an azimuth and elevation sensor for the NWC automatic formation drone control system. Its operation and maintenance are similar to those of the TED, described in this report.
