Measurement of Prompt Gamma-Rays from Thermal-Neutron Fission of 235U and 239Pu, and from Spontaneous Fission of 252Cf

Abstract

The prompt gamma-ray spectra were measured for the thermal-neutron fission of 235U, and 239Pu and for the spontaneous fission of 252Cf. All three measurements utilized the same detector and the same source detector geometry so that the results should indicate accurately the differences in the gamma-ray spectra and yields for the three isotopes. The yield of low-energy gamma-rays, E, was the lowest for 235U, and the total gamma-ray energy per fission event was smallest for this case. The yield below about 0.5 MeV was about twice as great for 252Cf, which had the softest gamma-ray spectrum and the largest E. The spectral shape is probably related to the fact that the heavier fissionable isotopes produce fission fragments whose mass-distribution peaks fall farther into the distorted-nucleus region, away from the N = 50 subshell for the light fragments and from the N = 82 subshell for the heavier fragments.
