The Determination and Nature of H2O in N2O4.
Abstract
The accuracy and precision of a modified Dumas reduction method for 'water equivalent' content of N2O4 was proven to be far superior to that of the current military propellant specification method (phase separation). In order to explain the inaccuracy of the specification method, it was necessary to: Confirm the nature of the protonated species in oxidized and unoxidized N2O4; Determine the solubility of H2O in N2O4 from 0C to 30C; Demonstrate that HNO3 co-distills with N2O4 at 0C as well as 21C. The modified Dumas reduction method described herein is recommended for inclusion in the military specification for N2O4 together with a corrected limit of 0.17% Water Equivalent. (Author)
