MAPCON Design Study.
Abstract
This report describes the system analysis and hardware design phases (1 June 1966 through 31 March 1967) of a program to develop a family of adaptive learning devices (MAPCON's) that will extract, identify, and delineate detail for map compilation. The hardware designs for the first free-standing device of the family (prototype MAPCON) and for a prototype MAPCON/Natural Image Computer version (MAPCON I) are presented. A discussion of the NIC/MAPCON interface is included, as are the complete rationale of the MAPCON design, design alternatives, test plans and materials, fabrication costs, throughput and error analysis. A five-year development plan, with briefing aids illustrating the various evolutionary stages, is also included. (Author)
