Laser Beams in Atmospheric Turbulence: A Review,

Abstract

This report summarizes the published literature on the interactions of atmospheric turbulence with laser beams. Mechanisms contributing to turbulence are discussed, and the principal effects on laser beams are presented in such a way as to be useful in systems design. Scattering is not covered; absorption at 10.6 microns is treated in an appendix, as is the controversy surrounding the Rytov approximation. (Author)
