Abstract
BIRDS EYE 6-68 was a regularly scheduled Arctic Ocean ice reconnaissance mission covering the Arctic Basin and the peripheral seas east from Greenland to 30 degrees E from 18 September to 2 October 1968. Ice observations were made mostly under daylight hours with weather conditions ranging from exceptionally good to poor. Ice conditions showed that the ice edge exceeded its normal mean position north of 71 degrees N in the Greenland Sea and in the western Barents Sea. Severe ice conditions existed east and north of Vestspitsbergen. Refreezing had begun north of 71 degrees N in the Greenland Sea. An ice chart is included to show observed conditions. (Author)
