Large Chamber Electron Beam Welding.
Abstract
A 30 KW, electron beam welder was installed into a 39-foot-diameter vacuum chamber to investigate manufacturing methods for welding large structures by remote and automatic controls. The problems involving high voltage cable transients, closed circuit television monitoring and seam tracking were realized and modifications were made. The operation of the system was demonstrated by the welding of three sets of 8-foot-long, 1-inch-thick, 6AL-4V Titanium plates and three sets of 10-foot-diameter D6AC rocket case rings. (Author)
