Rapid Site Preparation Techniques for VTOL Aircraft. Part III. Design and Test of Remote Site Preparation Systems. Volume I.

Abstract

The two basic polyester resin systems developed during Phase II were optimized to obtain the best strength and handling characteristics over a broad range of ambient temperatures. The optimization included the investigation of nonflammable catalysts, viscosity/temperature evaluation, milling procedures for high temperature resin, repair techniques for charred areas, and development of material specifications. To realize the fullest potential of the Rapid Site System, major emphasis was placed upon matching the fiber glass dispensing capability with the resin spraying equipment. Drawings and specifications were prepared for reproducing the final optimized application system. In addition, a small size and weight system was conceived for maximum air mobility (Mini-System). The Mini-System is a hand spray system with the resin and catalyst being pumped directly from 55-gallon drums and 40-pound containers respectively. Fiber glass mat is placed by hand. The approach to determining site thickness criteria, as developed previously, was used to obtain static and rolling wheel load date on representative soils. The data obtained was used as the basis for site thickness criteria included in the design handbook prepared during this phase. Field demonstrations were conducted to prepare waterproof covers for aircraft shelters. Additionally, and Air Force crew utilized the Mini-System equipment to prepare a typical parking area. The remote site VTOL aircraft pad prepared in Germany, for the Dornier Do-31 during Phase II, was instrumented and flight tested. (Author)
