Construction and Evaluation of a Polyester-Fiber Glass Pad for the Dornier DO-31 Jet VTOL Aircraft.

Abstract

The feasibility of a rapidly prepared lightweight operational VTOL pad was demonstrated by constructing a 150 x 157 foot pad at Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. The construction equipment was a self-contained modular system developed for preparing polyester-fiber glass surfaces over in-situ soils. The pad was constructed of a polyester resin reinforced fiber glass mat weighing about 4.4 pounds per square foot. The German Do-31 vertical take-off and landing aircraft, powered by ten jet engines and weighing over 40,000 pounds, successfully operated from the pad. (Author)
