Numerical Ground Motion Studies, Volume III. Ground Motion Studies and AFTON Code Development.

Abstract

Results are presented for four calculations of edge effects in test beds. Lateral edges are found to influence motion only slightly, whereas front and back edges pertrub horizontal ground motion strongly. Changes to the axisymmetric AFTON code to include elastic-plastic hysteretic materials are described; inelastic deformation theory is briefly reviewed, and generalized to take into account finite strain and nonlinear elasticity. Also discussed are a test of the code for a problem of spherical motion, a variable timestep scheme with results of AFTON 1 test calculations, and a numerical integration procedure for solution of the radiation diffusion equation.
