An Investigation of Laser Applications to Photographic Illumination,

Abstract

An experimental investigation in laser photographic illumination is presented using second harmonic neodymium and ruby giant pulse Q-switched lasers for front lighting of high velocity transient events. Two different conditions were investigated (a) underwater illumination; and (b) wide-field illumination in air. The second harmonic neodymium laser at 0.02 joules produced useful photographic results through 110 feet of water. In the wide-field air tests, areas up to 12 feet in diameter were illuminated with 0.75 joule from the ruby laser at 25 megawatts output. Included in the report are recommendations of useful film types for laser photography and an empirical formula relating laser output power to other parameters of a photographic system. (Author)
