Electro-Optical Components Optimization Study Program.

Abstract

The report covers the study effort on the Electro-Optical Optimization Study Program during the period 20 June 1968 to 17 January 1969. Discussed in the report are various aspects of low light level viewing systems, including human factors considerations, targets and backgrounds, atmospheric effects, natural and artificial illumination, effects of motion, optics, intensifiers, image tubes and preamplifiers, monitors and the various known sources of noise. Using this information, a mathematical model amenable to digital computer simulation is developed for low light level systems. This model enables calculation of system weight and system signal-to-noise ratio versus light level and line frequency, using the characteristics of the system's components. The use of the model is illustrated. Plans for the remainder of the program are also outlined. (Author)
