Spectrophotometric Measurement of Cadmium Vapor Density.

Abstract

The number of cadmium atoms in a 3261 A resonant frequency light path was calculated from the light intensity absorbed, and from the parameters of the Knudsen effusion cell which produced the cadmium beam. The two values were compared and were found to agree within a factor of about thirty. Excess free cadmium in the vacuum chamber was isolated as a probable cause of the discrepancy. The equations used for the calculations were derived in detail. A quick relative value check was derived from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Several references of value were listed, as were recommendations for further experimentation. (Author)
