Differential Scanning Calorimetry Determination of Kinetics and Activation Energy of the Slow Thermal Decomposition of Model Explosive Compounds.

Abstract

In this experimental investigation, differential scanning calorimetry techniques were used for the study of slow thermal decomposition of three model solid explosives in the N-aryl-N prime-tosyloxy-di-imide N-oxide system. Thermograms were recorded by subjecting the explosives to constant heating rates and to isothermal heating tests which proved more generally applicable to the study of explosive decomposition than previous analytical methods. Activation energy, reaction rate constant, and Arrhenius frequency factor determinations were made for each explosive compound. From this data a comparison of the solik state and the chemical autocatalytic mechanism of explosive decomposition was made. (Author)
