Changes in the Vertical Structure of the Waters Above the Rim of the Continental Shelf due to the Influence of Winds (Modificacoes na Estrutura Vertical das Augas Sobre a Borda da Plataforma Continental por Influencia do Vento),

Abstract

In order to study the relationship between wind variations and the vertical structure of the water (upwelling) and witness the role played by this upwelling in the fertilization of the euphotic zone, the Oceanographic Ship 'ALMIRANTE SALDANHA' was anchored in 22 deg 55.5 min S, 040 deg 52.2 min W in waters reaching a depth of 119 meters. Samples were taken from surface down to the ocean floor for analysis of salt content, chlorophyll, nitrate, nitrite, silicates, dissolved oxygen and phosphate. The following tests were made: bathythermograph reading, measurements of water currents, meteorological observation, water-temperature readings, in addition to the collection of phytoplankton, zooplankton and larvae above and below the thermocline.
