Advanced Aircraft Electric System Studies and Consultation for a Proposed Technical Approach (PTA) Documentation.

Abstract

A study program was conducted to establish a preliminary system concept definition for an Advanced Aircraft Solid State Electric System (SOSTEL II) and to prepare inputs for a Proposed Technical Approach (PTA) for the development of the system. Present aircraft electric system requirements were studied and projected in order to establish the requirements for the SOSTEL II system. Several concepts were formulated and evaluated with respect to their capability to meet the established SOSTEL II requirements. These concepts for the SOSTEL II system utilize the basic contactless switching system concept (SOSTEL I), and add to it multiplexing and power conditioning. A preliminary system definition for the SOSTEL II was established, and its effectiveness was evaluated and compared to that of a conventional system. It was concluded from the studies that the SOSTEL II system offers significant improvements in performance, reliability, and maintainability. A development program schedule was established for the SOSTEL II system. As a result of the studies and analysis, inputs were submitted for use by the Naval Air System Command in preparing the SOSTEL II PTA. (Author)
