MOL Fluid Dynamics Preliminary Data Report: Thrustor Plume Tests. Sequence Number B319. Item Data Number UT-132,

Abstract

An experimental test program was conducted to assess the effects of rocket exhaust plume impingement on MOL vehicle surfaces and equipment. Testing was performed in a vacuum chamber by use of flat panels to represent vehicle surfaces and a subscale thrustor. The program included surface heating tests and exhaust contamination investigations, with emphasis on the latter. Devices and techniques to control thrustor contamination were evaluated. Test data included plume mapping and thermal heating measurements; in situ measurements of thermal radiative and optical properties of selected contamination specimens; laboratory analyses of contamination deposits; and movie and still photographic coverage.
