Feasibility Study for Modes of Utilization for Advanced Instrumentation Systems.

Abstract

The final report contains the results of a feasibility study to investigate methods of measuring data from multiple sensors of high-frequency transient phenomena. The instrumentation system will sense, measure, process, telemeter, record, and display data from electric fields, magnetic fields, and induced currents on a high-performance aircraft. Included in the report are recommendations for control, calibration, reference channels, and quick-look. The system lends itself readily to permanent record and computer analysis. Considerations for the study were minimum development with technical growth, usefulness during the 1970-1980 time period, accuracy commensurate with technical objective, variability of the transient data, complexity, volume, long-term development, and full employment of human resources. The recommended system acquires data from two basic types of sensors, internal and external, and processes the data for acceptance by conventional telemetry. Multiple sensors and sets of sensors can be employed with minimum human intervention. On-board nonvolatile storage is read out and checked after each sensor data set. Quick-look analysis if provided for assurance of data quality, both from the aircraft sensors and the unperturbed signal. Calibration of the signal path from sensor output to display is included. On the ground the multiple channel data is received, recorded, and displayed. Employment of IRIG telemetry standard magnetic tape storage permits oscilloscope or oscillograph plots with minimum delay between events and later detailed computer analysis of data. (Author)
