Tests in Waves of a Small Model of a Hydrofoil Craft.

Abstract

Towing tests of a free-to-heave-and-trim 1/12 scale dynamically similar model of a 20-foot hydrofoil research craft are described. The tests were conducted at a Froude number corresponding to top speed in critical size waves. Measurement techniques which were used to determine water level location at the station of the outboard motor, wave velocity, wave frequency, wave height and model speed are presented. The effect of the model scale on the applicability of this type of testing as a hydrofoil research tool is discussed and recommendations for future refinement of the test technique are made.
