Airborne MHD Generator Development. One Megawatt Diagonal Conducting Wall MHD Generator.

Abstract

The objective of the contract is to establish the performance of a lightweight MHD generator system for airborne applications and perform a Systems Definition Study of an operational illumination system. To meet this objective, designs were completed for two one-megawatt heat-sink channels, two conductivity channels, one water-cooled channel and one regeneratively fuel-cooled channel. A 250 kilowatt arc illuminator was also designed for use as a load. Fabrication and assembly were completed on one of the heat-sink channels and two conductivity channels. Conductivity/combustor tests were made using the first conductivity channel to measure performance. Thermal tests and flow tests were conducted on the first heat-sink channel and a model of the water-cooled channel. (Author)
