Investigation of the Detector Characteristics of the Terbium Tris Chelate of 2,2,6,6,-Tetramethylheptane-3,5-Dione.

Abstract

The usefulness of the terbium tris chelate of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione as a radiation detector is assessed from measurements of its fluorescence lifetime, and response to alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. Both direct and indirect methods were used in a study of the lifetime. The fluorescence spectrum of the chelate in cyclohexane contains four narrow peaks centered at 490, 546, 586, and 625 millimicrons. It is concluded that the chelate is not useful as a scintillator.
