Determination of Wear Distributions.

Abstract

A mathematical model for calculating wear in machine elements is proposed. The model is developed for conforming as well as Hertzian type contact and includes correction for the presence of elastohydrodynamic fluid film forces. Resulting formulations are shown compatible with the Linear Wear Model and employ the same wear coefficient K. Statistical analyses of wear data accumulated from available sources to permit the formulation of probabilistic statements in connection with the Linear Wear Model are described. Results of extensive analyses in graphical form are shown to demonstrate the effect of several variables in assessing the adequacy of the wear model. Mean values of the constant of proportionality in the linear wear relationship, termed the wear coefficient, are tabulated for various material-lubricant combinations. (Author)
