Return Current Distribution for Improved Stabilization of Pinched Plasmas in Curved Tubes.

Abstract

A simple method for producing a curved plasma column which is stable during the time of pinch has been devised by tailoring the return current distribution so that the discharge is partially back-strapped. The experimental results of the improvement in stability obtained by properly arranging the return conductors about the pinch tube and the results of theoretical calculations of the magnetic fields in the curved portion of the pinch tube are given.
