Shock Isolation Elements Testing for High Input Loadings. Volume II. Foam Shock Isolation Elements.

Abstract

This document deals exclusively with the study of foam shock isolation. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the mechanical behavior characteristics of several open cell foams under dynamic and static loading, and determine their suitability as shock isolation elements, particularly under high rates of loading; identify and analyze anomalous foam behavior at high strain rates; establish the extent to which the anomalous phenomena occur and are significant for wave forms representative of actual facility loadings; perform scaled foam isolated mass tests, with shock inputs representative of actual facility loading, to test foam behavior in an actual shock isolation environment; evaluate revise or reformulate as necessary the mathematical model characterizing foam behavior, particularly for high strain rates; devise suitable tests to determine the foam model characteristic parameters; perform the parameter determination tests; write a computer program for the solution of shock isolation problems utilizing the reformulated mathematical foam model; and to evaluate the predictive ability of the model, by comparing analytically predicted results by means of the foam model, with actual foam shock isolation tests.
