Containing Controlled Fusion Reactions with Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields

Abstract

A toroidal magnetic plasma containment configuration is proposed wherein coils are centered on a closed helix. It is possible to optimize the qualities of the field by adjusting the coil configuration. The equations describing an equilibrium plasma in an axisymmetric system are derived for the radial profiles of the particle density distributions, radial and azimuthal drift velocities, and the electric and magnetic field strengths necessary to maintain equilibrium.
