Subtractive Light Flat Panel Display.

Abstract

The report describes the development of a solid state mosaic display based upon the principle of frustration of total internal reflectance. Major advantages of the display, in addition to its all solid state construction, include memory and relative immunity to washout due to a bright ambient environment (bright sunlight). The report is divided into two major parts. In Part I the basic principle of frustration of total internal reflection is first explained and then followed by a discussion of the materials and configuration needed to apply this principle. Part II of the report describes the development work performed to advance the techniques to achieve higher resolution, wider temperature range of operation and greater speed.
