A Parametric Study of the D-Region.

Abstract

D-region loss mechanisms are analyzed to obtain the effective recombination coefficient using estimated ion production rate profiles and electron density profiles from several sources in the literature. Possible techniques for reducing the uncertainties in the estimates of production rate profiles are discussed. Preliminary calculations indicate a nitric oxide concentration of 3 x 10 to the -10th power Nm at 70 km should be used in Lyman alpha production rate calculations. The effective recombination coefficient is found to be 4 x 10 to the -6th power cc/sec at 85 km and 5 x 10 to the -6th power cc/sec at 80 km. (Author)
