Qualification of the XM5 Ballistic Hatch Release (Type II and Type IIIA Certification Testing) for the High Speed Aerial Delivery Container (CTU-1/A).

Abstract

The XM5 release is designed to simplify egress of a recovery chute by a controlled disreefing on the CTU-1/A aerial delivery container which is used for high speed (400 knots) delivery techniques and requires a forced removal of the tail hatch. Verification testing and Type I certification testing had been completed and documented by Frankford Arsenal. This report covers Type II and Type IIIA certification testing of the XM5 release. The testing covered the qualification phase except the Technical Data Package portion. The two types of certification testing were to conform to the outlines prescribed by Department of the Navy letters. (Author)
