A Low Cost Steerable Array Using Balanced Mode Phase Shifters.

Abstract

The report describes an approach for realizing a 10,000 element planar array intended for operation in the vicinity of 100 MHz. Particular emphasis is placed on describing the performance to be expected for the serial linear arrays which form subelements of the planar array. The investigations are based on the measured characteristics of a phase shifter constructed as part of the study and include consideration of effects due to variation in the attenuation and the characteristic impedance of the pphase shifter. Additional considerations in conjunction with the linear array portion of the study include the design of a suitable coupling network for the radiating dipoles and an examination of the effects of the coupling network and radiating elements upon the array characteristics. Finally, the overall design of the planar arrays is considered and methods of controlling the row and the orthogonal scanning systems are described. Based on the assumed configuration, a cost estimate for the overall construction is compiled. (Author)
