Design Study for Runway Lighting Attachment for Aircraft Flight Simulators

Abstract

Results of an engineering feasibility study on a lighted runway attachment are described herein. This device is intended for training pilots in night landing techniques when used in conjunction with existing flight simulators. The study program was directed primarily toward evaluation of special film projection techniques using point light sources and discrimination of images by polarized light to overcome parallax. Analysis of the system upon which the study contract was based indicates that, while a workable arrangement could be developed, several inherent deficiencies in the system cannot be eliminated. It is therefore concluded that further development of this device, directed toward a new system concept, is desirable.
