The Classification of Visual Images by Spatial Filtering.

Abstract

From certain known aspects of the human visual system, a model for the classification of visual images is derived. In the model, arrays of basic computational elements of the kind found in human cortex are suitable interconnected and act together to perform a two-dimensional Fourier transform of the spatial input stimulus. Classification is accomplished by comparing spatially filtered transforms of the input stimuli with prototypes which have been obtained and stored during a preliminary training period. Results of several simulations are presented in which hand-printed alphanumeric characters have been classified. (Author)
