An Investigation of Sinus Arrhythmia.

Abstract

Sinus arrhythmia (phasic changes in heart rate associated with respiration) is explained as a reflex mechanism in the right heart. The postulated stimulus is blood return and the action is mediated through atrial receptors and the vagus nerve. Human experimental results are predicted and demonstrated in terms of the hypothesis. Published data is examined and explained by the hypothesis. Recommendations concerning further work and methods of approach are suggested. (Author)
