Reciprocal Ferrimagnetic Digital Phase Shifters.

Abstract

This report covers the objectives, work performed and results of a program undertaken to develop a planar reciprocal ferrite phase shifter for the 5.4 GHz to 5.9 GHz range. The three phase shift structures developed included a loosely coupled meander line phaser incorporating a magnetized yttrium-iron-garnet substrate; a tightly coupled meander line phaser; and a reciprocal phaser module fabricated from a pair of microstrip junction circulators. During the program, analytical and experimental determinations were made of the electrical properties of various transmission lines as they relate to phaser structures. The investigations were made in microstrip transmission line after comparative analyses of other available transmission lines. Special considerations were given to such factors as substrate material characteristics, fabrication processes, circuit design, measurement techniques, problems associated with miniature transmission line systems, and switching problems.
