Fuze Well Liner for BLU-31/B.

Abstract

Impact tests of early production units of the BLU-31/B Demolition Bomb revealed that the standard Fuze Liner Assemblies used in these units were not surviving hard target impact. In addition, bomb detonation tests showed that the explosive booster in the standard fuzes did not generate sufficient detonation pressure to reliably cause a high order detonation of the relatively insensitive main charge explosive. An insensitive main charge explosive is required to prevent premature detonation upon hard target impact. A rapid response program was undertaken by GARD to solve these problems. A new Fuze Liner Case with 3/16-inch wall thickness was designed and fabricated. (Author)
