The Effect of Voids on the Mechanical Properties of High Modulus Graphite Fiber/Epoxy-Reinforced Composites.

Abstract

Nondestructive tests (NDT) were used in conjunction with physical and mechanical properties destructive tests to (a) determine the influence of voids on the mechanical properties of Thornel 50 graphite fiber-reinforced epoxy composites tested in normal and high humidity environments; (b) examine fabrication methods for introducing voids into these composites; (c) investigate methods for measuring void content, with emphasis on NDT techniques; and (d) determine if correlations exist for mechanical properties and void content.
