Analytical Prediction of Defects Occurrence in Simple and Complex Forgings.
Abstract
A three-part investigation was performed in the area of simple forging, such as upsetting cylinders, rings and slabs to study the relationship between friction at the tool-workpiece interface and the deformation characteristics and fracture of materials in compression. In the first part, experiments are described involving the upsetting of solid cylinders and rings of annealed SAE 1040 steel at room temperature for various end conditions. A tentative analysis is given for formulating the strains at the free surface. In the second part, observations by the visioplasticity method were made on plastic flow in plane-strain and axisymmetric compression. In the third part, an attempt was made to analyze theoretically the deformation characteristics in simple compression by the finite element method. (Author)
