Human Engineering for the Air Force Control-Display Program.

Abstract

Emphasis was placed upon the conduct of a comprehensive program on control-display problems associated with the landing of VTOL aircraft under all-weather conditions and the development of an information center for control-display engineers. Human engineering support was provided in an inflight study documenting the performance of a specially tailored VTOL stability augmentation system (SAS), the accomplishment of analyses pertaining to profiles and documentation of the SAS turn-coordination scheme, and the design and development of a ground-based simulator system to be employed in the study of VTOL control-display problems. Two studies were conducted which examined the presentation of rate-of-closure information to the pilot on an electromechanical Attitude Director Indicator using the spreading runway concept. A research program was formulated that is aimed at gaining and understanding and solution to the aircraft subsystem management problems dealing with mode annunciation, fault warning, and mode selection. An initial assessment of the utility of accident data in structuring control-display research was made. Detailed planning and initial execution of a program aimed at the development of the management requirements for the implementation, conduct, and evaluation of control-display research was performed.
