Tropic Integrated Engineering and Service Test (Tropic Retest) of Tank, Collapsible Self-Supporting, 5000-BBL Capacity.
Abstract
The US Army Tropic Test Center conducted an Integrated Engineering and Service Test of two 5000-Barrel Collapsible Tanks to determine the degree to which the test items met the technical and operational performance requirements in a humid tropic environment. The test was scheduled for 15 months and consisted of static storage and cycling. One tank was tested for two months, at which time the item failed due to fabric separation at the air vent fitting atop the tank. The remaining tank was tested for five months and terminated nine months early due to rapid deterioration of the item. Three deficiencies were discovered during the test. Six shortcomings were found. It was concluded that the test items were unsuitable for Army use in a humid tropic environment. It was recommended that development of collapsible self-supporting tanks be continued to select suitable materials and construction.
