Infrared Detection and Camouflage,

Abstract

The proliferation and sophistication of infrared detection and fire control devices should motivate the military to reassess current theories and practices of camouflage and, consequently, improve the state of the art. The armed forces of all modern nations have directed their research efforts towards the development of camouflage materials which will foil not only those detectors which operate in the visible radiation region, but those which operate in the infrared as well. It was an awareness of this trend in technology that prompted the writing of this book. Its purpose is to help military commanders and leaders of all ranks remain abreast of recent developments in camouflage by discussing the significance of infrared radiation detection and describing some effective countermeasures. Comprehensive coverage demands that some mention be made of visible detection countermeasures as well; therefore, it will be discussed in so far as it is relevant to infrared detection countermeasures.
