BIRDS EYE 8-68, 29 November-16 December 1968.
Abstract
BIRDS EYE 8-68 was a regularly scheduled Arctic Ocean ice reconnaissance mission covering the North American sector of the Arctic Basin including the Greenland Sea and Denmark Strait from 29 November to 16 December 1968. Ice observations contained in this report were made under moonlight conditions. Fair weather prevailed; however, cloud coverage significantly reduced visibility. Observation of the stage of ice development and topography was difficult and at times impossible. A flight over the PARRY Channel in the Canadian Archipelago revealed fractures from Baffin Bay to Resolute but no openings further westward until northwest of Banks Island. Extensive ice coverage observed on BIRDS EYE 7-68 (1-17 November) continued to exist in the southern Greenland Sea. (Author)
