Computer Experiments on an Electron Diode.

Abstract

The work described in the report is a study of electron beam behavior which lays the foundation for a study of beam interaction with plasmas. The study was started to explore the general problems of beam stopping by a plasma in the hope that a device might be developed which would exploit the beam-plasma interaction phenomenon as a means of efficiently stopping and collecting the spent beam of a high power microwave tube. The report deals with three important problems encountered in the behavior of electron beams. One problem dealt with was a study of a simple type of single species depressed collector. Part of the depressed collector problem is the limiting perveance phenomenon associated with the single beam planar diode. The behavior of this device was studied with a hot beam as well as a cold one. A computer simulation technique is the major research tool used in the study. The development of any computer simulation technique must include an understanding of the effects introduced by model approximations and assumptions. A study of these effects was carried out on a computer model. (Author)
