Structural Response of an Unlined Vertical Cylinder in Operation MINE ORE.

Abstract

A 56-inch-diameter by 15-foot-deep unlined vertical cylinder was tested in Operation MINE ORE of the MINE SHAFT Series. This cylinder was subjected to the air blast and the air blast-induced and directly induced ground motions created by the explosion of a 100 ton partially buried sphere of TNT. This structure was located 60 feet from the charge at a free field radial velocity of about 19 fps. Accelerations, velocities and strains were measured in the structure and in the surrounding free field. Additional passive measurements were made in the cylinder. Magnitudes of motions and strains in the cylinder were related to the surrounding free field environment in the analysis. (Author)
